Écorce Sanguine

Finally i got the best nail polish of this autumn in my possession. A bit weird though. I was called last Friday that the collection was finally in the store, and when i said i was after the warm red nail polish Écorce Sanguine, i was told that it wasn’t included yet. It would arrive this monday, today, after three o’clock. When i arrived today at the store, the Bijenkorf, it became clear that the Écorce Sanguine was the one polish that had arrived last friday. Confusing. But still, it was there, i bought it, it’s absolutely wonderful!

Ècorce Sanguine means Blood Bark. I just looked it up. It is a warm deep red with a golden shimmer. The shimmer shows in the sunlight only. On the nails it’s hardly visible. The nail polish covers the nails completely with only one coat.

Too bad my nails are so short. Last week i had them a few millimeters longer, but almost every single one split on me and i had to clip them a lot shorter. But i still love the way they look!

I love this color and the finish of this nail polish. A new favourite!

The slight yellow tinge on my nails is from the fresh root kurkuma i put in my dinner just before i made these photos. I do apologize!

Dark purple glittery nails

Today i painted my nails.

2015-08-24-18.38.58
A dark purple, Vendetta, from Chanel. This a purple black polish with a slight silver sheen. This polish covers with one layer. Excellent!

Mad as a Hatter from OPI is from the Alice in Wonderland collection. It is a limited edition. From a distance it looks grey, but up close you see silver, orange, red, purple, green and blue glitters. It is possible to coat your nails completely, but i did choose to put on the Vendetta first and then one layer of the glitter polish. Loving it!

Flower nails

Yesterday i started to read a bit on Rookie. It says of itself that it is an online publication for teenage girls featuring writing, photography, illustrations, videos, and more from our lovely contributors and readers. I did add the magazine to my rss feeds, but there is a whole backlog of articles to dive into. I do like the tone of voice, the style, music and beauty things. A few years back i did read the Style Rookie by Tavi Gevinson, but i stopped when she started Rookie and stopped working on her own blog.

Anyway, i found this article about painting flowers on your nails, Painted Flower. Which i loved. I went through my collection nails polishes and first tried to find all the reds (a few) and pinks (none!). I than switched to a darker theme, with a red flower with a yellow centre and a darker background. But no! i went for a green background with the yellow / pink-red flower. So i started out.

First i had to remove the old polish. Then i remembered my remarks of a week ago about my cuticles and decided to use Lemony Flutter from Lush and my Shea Butter Ultra Rich Hand Cream from L’Occitance. Then i put on the Nail repair from Trind.

2015-08-05-17.37.00
After some time thinking and picking out colours, i decided to do each nail the same with these colours. At the utmost left the Nail repair from Trind, at the right the top coat.
2015-08-05-17.55.25
I started out with the green with a golden shine as a base.
2015-08-05-17.59.54
The Mimosa yellow made a dot in the middle.
2015-08-05-18.30.57
This was a bit trickier. I did find out i couldn't wait too long to get into the red dot with my tiny brush and draw them to the yellow middle. To give the yellow a bit more shine and hide the red stripes into them, i put a little bit more yellow over them. After all this, when it was all dry, i added the top coat.

Today i painted my nails

Today, Tuesday July 28, i painted my nails.

2015-07-28-19.43.01
My fave Chanel colour Frenzy first
2015-07-28-19.53.02
and then the Nars Adelita as a topcoat

Looking at my nails this close, i really need to work on my cuticles. Either trim them, or moisturize them a bit more. Other than that, a bit longer would be nicer. But still, for me they look nice.

The other hand though.. pfff… my index finger just keeps on breaking of. So it’s rather short. The middle finger is a little bit longer, but still too short. The rest is ok.

I do like this combo. It is a kind of nude, but the transparent gold does give a warm shine. A keeper!

Also, yes, this is the first time i painted my nails after 19 February’s My nails. Just in case you were wondering. 🙂

New eyeshadows

Making up my eyes yesterday did put a thought in my head. This morning i was thinking about what i would do for todays post. I had no idea, but then i thought about my MAC palette, what i wrote yesterday and i decided to go to the Bijenkorf and buy three eyeshadows and make my palette complete.

Yesterday i wrote about the colours i was thinking about. I want warm orangey colours. I did get one i wrote about, Coppering. It’s a beautiful deep warm orange with a frosty shimmer. I did check the other colours i wrote about, Rule, Red Brick and Expensive Pink, but i was tempted by another beautiful cool red colour i had been reading about for years, Cranberry. It’s an absolutely gorgeous cool berry red with a pink shimmer. The last colour i bought was Nylon, a warm golden shimmery light yellowish off white. It’s also gorgeous.

So i’m happy my palette is complete. Until i get the next one. Then this process will start all over again 🙂

My complete MAC pro palette!

I did make up my eye this morning, a lot simpler though than yesterday. I added Lingering to my eyebrows. A dark line above my eye done with a eye pencil, with a bit of Typographic and Sketch to blend the line and give it a bit of colour. Just now i added Nylon at the inner corner, Coppering on the center of the eyelid and a bit of Handwritten on the outer part. I also put a bit more Charcoal Brown on the crease. That's it!

An eye make up

I went for quite a dark eyelook for this post. Because, well, i do enjoy putting it on! First i’ll show which colours i have in my small collection.

In the top photo you see my Chanel palette Mystic eyes which i got for my birthday a couple of years ago. You also see the MAC Soft Ochre paint pot which i use for a base, the Dipdown fluidline for an eyeliner, the Clinique high lengths mascara, the Lingering eyebrow crayon and the Clarins concealer for around the eyes.

2015-05-18-17.38.20

My MAC pro palette

  • Vanilla
  • All that glitters
  • Satin taupe
  • Wedge
  • Charcoal brown
  • Handwritten
  • Sumptuous olive
  • Club
  • Blackberry
  • Sketch
  • Copperplate
  • Typographic

There is still room in this palette, but i’m not sure what colour would be good with it. Sometimes i think about Carbon, the black. But sofar Typographic was enough of a dark for me. A light shimmery colour would be good too, but i do have those colours in the Chanel palette. With my blue grey eyes, an orange colour will be good. I read good reviews on Expensive Pink. Red Brick matte and Coppering veluxe pearl i will check in the shop soon. And there is Orange matte too. I might even get two different finishes. I do like a bit of shimmer, just not all over my eyes. I’ll let you know once i bought new colours!

Brushes

I started to buy brushes i think like 6 years ago. Make up brushes that is. They are wonderful! Most are MAC brushes, one Bobbi Brown, and a couple i bought in the art shop not far from where i live. I actually bought my paints, water colours, papers and all other stuff in that shop, Harolds, when i was still making real drawings. Like two months ago, when i was looking into some of my old boxes with pencils and charcoal and eraser i found a couple of really thin brushes i actually put into my make up pot. I could use them for doing a really thin eyeliner. One time i used one of these for it, it worked really well!

I did clean my brushes today. To be honest i don’t do that enough, it was months ago since i last did that. It is usually advised to clean your brushes once a week at least. But ooh well, i don’t use that much make up lately anyway. But i do admit, it is a good feeling having them standing there all clean!

Foundation

The face at the top of this post, is my usual face. I do wear glasses most of the time, but i do have daily lenses. As you see i do have not a bad skin for a 51 year old woman. A few wrinkles beneath the eyes, a few lines on the forehead. I do have slight red cheeks, which i don’t mind too much.

This post shows how i prepare my skin for a full make up. Which is something i hardly ever do. And i mean really that. But i did want to try it out myself. Usually, i use some of the foundation on my chin and cheeks. A bit of concealer and the powder to finish it. Both are quite new, so they haven’t been in my routine that long.

I did buy the Clarins Concealer a few months ago on recommendation of the pixiwoo girls. The Mac prep+prime finishing powder was recommended by multiple sources, Miss Lipgloss among them.

I am interested in getting a primer. I haven’t done any research yet. Maybe a smashbox one, i did read some good reviews on those. But developments are going fast. And i do not want to many silicones really, so i should read more about ingredients.

My foundation is nearly empty. So i do need to read more about these too! It’s a shame Nars isn’t sold here in the Netherlands, i’m really interested in the Sheer Glow Faundation. The Estee Lauder Double Wear seems pretty good too. But as i said, it’ll be quite a task to find the right one.

After i made all the photos for this post, i rushed to the bathroom and removed everything! I was happy to have my normal face back. I would only use this sort of make up for very rare occasions, not for daily life.

Skincare: face and body

Over the years i’ve used many different types of skincare.

I did use mostly Clinique things. It was high end, but not too expensive. I used the Superdefense moisturizer SPF 20. As a night cream i used the Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer. I did try the Clinique 3 step system with soap and moisturizer, but it never stuck. I still have a small Super Rescue tube, which i will use up in the coming months.

A few years ago i started to read about skincare on blogs and watch more make-up and skincare youtube clips. Some recommended Dr. Jetske Ultee, a research physician in cosmetic dermatology. She has a list of recommended products (in dutch) on her site, which i now use as a starting point. It is hard though not to be tempted by all the beautiful selling talk which is thrown at you on the street, in the shops and online.

Skincare: face
For cleaning i mostly use warm water. Since i do not use make-up daily, water is enough for me. I do have a Body Shop Aloe calming facial cleanser and Aloe calming toner for when i do need to remove make-up, but i only use it once every two or three weeks.

As day cream i now use the Olaz total effects day cream perfume free. It is a soft cream with hardly any smell which does get absorbed into the skin quickly. It leaves my skin feeling soft and fresh, just what i need. The Total Effects most important ingredient is Niacinamide (2).

This cream will cost you around 20 euros, but the Kruidvat shop does have regular 50% discounts on this brand, so keep an eye out for that. I also have a Olaz serum i irregularly use, the Olaz Total effects Instant smoothing serum.

I did use Ren for a short time in between the Clinique and Olaz products. I did enjoy the feel and packaging of this brand. Sadly it’s getting a bit too expensive for me right now. I still have a Bio Retinoid anti-ageing concentrate i sometimes use in the evening.

On the market i bought a pure argan oil for use on my face as well.

I did stop using a dedicated night cream all together. I use the oil now sometimes. I could use my day cream as a night cream, since it doesn’t have an SPF in it. This was also a conclusion i reached after reading about on the blog of Dr. Jestke Ultee.

Skincare: face, soon
There are two more product types i will start using soon. First it is an exfoliant. I should read more about the two different types – salicylic acid and glycolic acid – and make an informed choice. My skin seems fairly normal to me, not overly oily or dry. I do get a red face quickly though, so i think i have a sensitive skin. It seems that salicylic acid is the best for me, since it’s a bit milder and suitable for a sensitive skin.

The other product i want to start using is a sun protector. This does coincide with the exfoliant, which makes your skin more sensitive to sunshine, since your upper skin layer will be thinner. I will go through the list on the product advice page and will pick an affordable one out to start with.

Skincare: hands and body
I did find my favourite hand cream of all time, the L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Hand Cream. I use a bit in the morning and a bit in the evening, rubbing it into the upper side of my hands. It’s a wonderful thick cream, with a faint honey and almond smell. I just bought my second tube of this stuff. I simply don’t wanna use anything else.

I was tempted and bought a Shea Butter Body Cream as well. It is wonderful stuff. Yes, the price is a bit high, 33 euros for 200 ml. I will go back to making a homemade body butter. I do like the idea of knowing all the ingredients in what i use. It’s also pretty easy to make it yourself, you only need a few ingredients.

Skincare: body butter recipe
Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Shea Butter
  • 1/2 cup Cocoa Butter or Mango Butter
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 cup light oil like almond, olive or jojoba
  • Optional: 10-30 drops Essential Oils for scent

Instructions

  1. In a double boiler or glass bowl, combine all ingredients except essential oils.
  2. Bring to medium heat and stir constantly until all ingredients are melted.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Move to fridge and let cool another 1 hour or until starting to harden but still somewhat soft.
  5. Use a hand mixer to whip for 10 minutes until fluffy.
  6. Return to fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
  7. Store in a glass jar with a lid and use as you would regular lotion or body butter. If your home stays above 75 degrees, it may soften and need to be kept at the fridge, but it will stay whipped at a temperature lower than that.
  8. Enjoy!

A year and a half ago i went to drugstore de Lang in Rotterdam to buy the ingredients for this butter. Soon i will go back there and get more ingredients. Just a short trip with the tram is all i need. Or… i could go for a walk!

Skincare
I do feel the products i use are fairly basic. But i admit, i do love a bit of pampering. I do not use the body butter each day. I do use it around twice a week on my arms and legs. I try to show a bit of restraint in the products i use. But yeah, i do get tempted!

I am curious about using an exfoliator. I have never used it, so i will make my skin get used to it slowly. I’ll keep you informed about my experiences with it.

For Dutch people, the website of Dr. Jetske Ultee is a great resource. I’m afraid i do not know any similar site in english, or any other language. If you do know any such site, with clear and precise information about beauty products, please share that in the comments below.

My nails

It’s been weeks, months even since i put nail polish on my nails. Currently my nails are short, and they do flake rather easily, so i keep them short. I use a glass nail file to shorten them. And i do have this nail polisher to put a bit of shine on them. But last week i did get the idea of making a post about my nail polishes. And today i thought i will do it even better and put different polishes on my nails. Nudes on the two outer fingers, and a bright colour on the middle one. So yes, here we go!
