Orality and Literacy

This book, Orality and Literacy written by Walter J. Ong, i first borrowed from the library, sometime in the nineties i’m pretty sure. Several times i got it, and read it all. Much too quickly of course.

After 2002 i bought it from Amazon.

A couple of weeks ago i got it out and started reading it again. I try to read a lot slower now, make sure i understand every word i read. Try to understand every sentence. It does make an impression. Reading about the development of the alphabet, languages, trying to understand the Greek use of vowels in their written language. Trying to understand what Ong writes about the constant development of the human mind and psyche in the thousands of years from an oral culture to our current day written and secondary oral culture. I even start to think about AI, not one of my favourite topics i confess.

I’m still halfway. Lots of reading still to do.
